Mighty ETX Star Party

3 July 2004

This star party was held at the Wigwam Resort in Litchfield Park AZ., just west of downtown Phoenix.  Mike Weasner of Mighty ETX fame set this up for all ETX users who wanted to venture out into the desert heat.  Actually it was quite pleasant once the Sun was close to setting.  By 9pm it was just perfect.  We gathered on the side of the golf course just north of the main group of rental casitas.  The Westercon57 Science Fiction Convention was being held there this weekend, and they had a group of telescopes set up also.  All of us started to pack up the scopes around 11:30pm as the lawn sprinklers seemed to be getting closer and closer, despite the assurances of the management at the Wigwam Resort that the ones in the area we were set up had been set so they would not turn on until late in the morning.

Mike Fowler from Oceanside Photo & Telescope was in attendance and brought with him some really cool door prizes to give away.  We had difficulty finding any doors, but the ETX group faired pretty good in the prize department.  One attendee (I will post his name as soon as I find out who he is) won an ETX90 telescope.

Mike also gave away a Meade SWA 18mm eyepiece and I was the lucky winner! For the uninitiated the SWA's are pretty darned decent wide field Plossl designs and the views through it on my ETX125 were great.  The moon rose right about the time I received the eyepiece and I used it to view lunar detail.  I have not been too much of a fan about the moon, but since I got the ETX I have looked at it a lot.  The planetary and lunar views are astounding.

Earla received the newly redesigned Rigel Systems Skylite (she really, really wanted that ETX90).

We have a couple of the original lights and I always thought it would be hard to improve on the design but the Rigel Guy pulled it off.  My biggest problem now is I get the two original lights and Earla won't let me use the new one!
