I elected to take a break from other things and refurbish the foot pedal.  Unfortunately I neglected to take a picture of it before I started, but trust me, it was REALLY crusty and ugly...

 

Foot Pdeal I

I replaced the ragged armored cable with a good quality rubber cord.  As this will not be used in an industrial setting, this will be more than adequate.
